Back to school - a lesson on letting go
Now that school is fully back in session, we think it's a good time to revisit some lessons for those of us who may have forgotten them while getting tan and dissociating at the beach all summer. Anyone that’s been in therapy (not retail therapy, but close) for the past few years has heard of Attachment style (not fashion style, but close). So, in the realm of fashion, where emotional attachments often blur the lines between sentiment and practicality, the act of letting go of sentimental items in our closets presents both a profound challenge and a transformative opportunity. Are you an avoidant purger? Interesting...makes note in notebook...Clothes imbued with memories and significance can occupy valuable space and hinder our journey toward a more functional and harmonious closet. Here is why decluttering is so important - and it goes way beyond just having more shelf space. Sentimental items often hold a special place in our hearts, symbolizing personal milestones, relationships, or past experiences. While these pieces may evoke fond memories, their physical presence can inadvertently contribute to a cluttered and disorganized wardrobe. The emotional weight attached to these items can create an illusion of attachment, making it challenging to assess their actual utility. “But I wore this on our first dateeee.” Don’t care. Donate! From a transcended perspective, physical space is often viewed as a reflection of mental and emotional clarity. Clutter, including sentimental garments, can create a sense of stagnation and pause the flow of positive energy. Clearing out space in our closets mirrors creating room in our lives for new experiences and opportunities. New is good. Change is good. Your future self is already thanking you.
Scientific research also has a say in this. And you’re not about to argue with science, are you? Data highlights the impact of clutter on cognitive function and mental well-being. Studies have shown that disorganized spaces can increase stress levels and reduce our ability to focus and make decisions. Sweaters and jeans that no longer serve a functional purpose, can contribute to this cognitive overload. Enough said.
A clutter-free wardrobe enhances both functionality and inspiration - in short, your life. By letting go of items that no longer serve us, you create space for better and new. Your evolved, curated collection becomes a source of inspiration, allowing you to build outfits that resonate with your present self, leaving the old in pictures and memories. The process of decluttering ultimately leads to a more intentional and satisfying approach to fashion, where each piece contributes to a cohesive closet and more peace in your life.
